New Google Office Space – London

We’ve all seen the Google office before. They always have flare, always have creativity, and usually are flamboyant. Google recently redesigned their engineering floor in London, and this time the look is very futuristic! This new Google office space will house 350 google employees. The use of colour is quite eclectic, ranging from white and orange to predominately green to all blue! We must say this new office space is really cool, we especially love the meeting rooms and the conference areas!

Google Office – Russia

largeNewGoogleLogoFinalFlat-a

Google has developed a reputation for being able to merge both technology and creativity seamlessly, with many putting their meteoric success partly down to the ability and desire to do so.  Perhaps one of the main ways Google showcases this synergy is through the design of their offices. Google offices are world renowned for being some of the most fun and well-designed offices in the world – and they’ve just done it again! We’ve covered many Google offices over the years, but their Russian offices are the latest edition to the roster.

The Russian Google office was designed by the Swiss design firm Camenzind Evolution. As you can see in the pictures the style is a mixture of so called “geek chic” and techy futurism.  We think the Decoist hit the nail on the head when they said:

Google’s Russian offices are nothing less of creative. They inspire life and are meant as a way to escape from your daily workload. It’s definitely a place we’d love to spend our 9-to-5 life at.

Six Principles for Innovators to live by on the Web – Fred Wilson

Venture Capitalist and blogger Fred Wilson gave a talk a few days ago at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View. The key point of his talk was about disruption — what companies are doing out there to change the technology space. Nothing earth-shatteringly new, but interesting insights from a smart guy.

This hour long talk includes his six words to live by on the Internet: Global, Social, Open, Mobile, Playful, Intelligent — and a bonus seventh one: Instantaneous. As an investor in Twitter, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Wilson included this last one.

Google device lets you Monitor your Electricity usage in Realtime

Until now, if you wanted to use Google PowerMeter to track your energy usage, you had to hope your electric utility had or was willing to install a smart meter for you. Today, Google announced the availability of a device that puts your energy usage data into your own hands.

The TED 5000 from Energy Inc. is a real-time electricity usage monitor that you can purchase and install yourself, with packages starting around $200. It can run the free Google PowerMeter tool, allowing you to check on your personal home energy data from any device that can access the web.

The TED 5000 is Google’s first official device partner for PowerMeter, but the company indicates they plan to work with more providers who make energy monitors to get PowerMeter support built-in. And if you already own a TED 5000, you can perform a firmware upgrade that will allow you to run Google (Google) PowerMeter on your existing device as well.

Do you use Google PowerMeter or other tools to better monitor the energy usage in your home? Have you made any interesting discoveries about unexpected sources of electricity usage? Are there other software tools your fellow energy-conscious individuals might want to check out?

Google Rents Goats to Mow Office Lawn

At the Mountain View, CA headquarters of Google, goats have been employed as a low-carbon alternative to gasoline lawnmowers. About 200 goats are used for a week at a time to trim weeds, eat grass, and clean up brush. They also fertilize as they consume. A border collie named Jen keeps the goats in a manageable herd. They were rented from California Grazing, a company which has 800 goats for rent (also known as weed abaters). If you need any goats in the Bay Area, operators are now standing by.

Google Zurich Office

Here’s an inside look at the incredible Google Zurich office. Their “team is strong in all things maps and geo, even more so after having integrated several dozen specialists from Swiss company Endoxon, which Google acquired.”

So there is alot of work here going into Google Maps and Google Earth — the built-in flight simulator discovered by a blogger a few weeks ago was developed here.

Google – Creative Workspace

Meeting “pods” in the style of Swiss chalets and igloos, fireman poles to allow easy access between floors and a slide to ensure that people can get to the cafeteria as quickly as possible are all part of the striking design at Google’s new European engineering headquarters in Zurich Switzerland.

The building was designed for – and partly by – the 300 engineers who will work there. The alternative office is both a showcase for Google’s unconventional approach to business and a symbol to prove that Google is no longer a US-centric firm. Read more →
